"Coprolite" is a scientific name for the fossilized excrement, feces or droppings of ancient animals. It was coined by Dr. William Buckland (1829, see below). Hawkins (1834) illustrated several coprolites in his book on ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs. In the Smoky Hill Chalk Member of the Niobrara Formation, those animals were sharks, teleost (bony) fish and marine reptiles. These fossils can tell us much about what kind of prey these animals ate and how their digestive systems worked.
