Oreodont Mammal Jaw | Merycoidodontoidea | South Dakota

An Oreodont (Merycoidodontoidea) jaw with teeth from the White River Badlands of South Dakota.

Oreodonts were extinct herbivorous mammals that roamed North America from the Middle Eocene to the Miocene (roughly 40 to 5 million years ago), peaking in diversity during the Oligocene. Distantly related to modern camels and pigs, these stocky, four-toed plant-eaters ranged from sheep- to tapir-sized, roaming ancient woodlands and grasslands in vast herds. Because they were so abundant, their fossils are among the most common mammalian finds in North American deposits today, particularly in the South Dakota Badlands.
