Large Iguanodontid Tooth | UK Dinosaur | Isle of Wight

A large Iguanodontid tooth crown from the Wessex Formation of the Isle of Wight. Iguanodontids were a diverse group of herbivorous dinosaurs that roamed the Earth during the Early Cretaceous period. They were characterized by their large size, distinctive thumb spikes, and specialized teeth for grinding plant material. British Iguanodontids were also amongst some of the first dinosaurs ever described.

This is a very large, well preserved tooth with nice denticles, excellent enamel and some natural feeding wear to the tip. A stunning example of an Isle of Wight Iguanodontid tooth.

The geological formation where this tooth was found, the Wessex Formation, is an Early Cretaceous geological unit of mudstones, sandstones, and plant debris beds, formed in a subtropical floodplain with rivers and lagoons. It yields diverse fossils, including iguanodontids like Iguanodon and Mantellisaurus, theropods like Neovenator, and sauropods like Ornithopsis, plus crocodiles, fish, and pollen. Its significance lies in its rich dinosaur record, offering a snapshot of a vibrant, herbivore-dominated ecosystem in prehistoric Europe.

The tooth comes boxed with the specimen name, place it was found and age (tooth can be removed from box).

This is genuine fossil. All the specimens we offer come with a lifetime authenticity guarantee.
