Leptoceratops Tooth | Hell Creek Fm. | Montana

An beautiful spitting/shedding tooth crown from the small ceratopsian Leptoceratops gracilis, collected from the Late Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation. This specimen features the classic shield-like crown profile with a rich, glossy dark enamel and prominent vertical primary ridge.

Unlike its massive, horned relative Triceratops, Leptoceratops was a primitive, small-bodied (around 2 meters long) hornless ceratopsian that walked primarily on two or four legs. Its specialised cheek teeth formed a powerful, shearing dental battery evolved for processing tough, fibrous vegetation. A nice tooth from one of the less common herbivorous dinosaurs of the Maastrichtian.

The formation where this tooth was found, the Hell Creek Formation, was laid down by ancient floodplains in the Late Cretaceous and preserves fossils of Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus, as well as many other well known dinosaurs. Its top, the K-Pg boundary, marks the asteroid impact that ended the dinosaurs.
