Tyrannosaurid Tooth | Hell Creek Fm. | Montana

A tyrannosaurid tooth from a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex / Nanotyrannus lancensis. This is a premaxillary or position 1 dentary tooth from the front of the jaw with a distinctive D-shaped cross section - unlike the teeth in the rest of the jaw, these were evolved to strip meat rather than crushing bone. Isolated front teeth are structurally identical across both Tyrannosaurus rex and Nanotyrannus, making it impossible to definitively assign to one or the other.
