Nanotyrannus lancensis Tooth | Hell Creek Fm. | Montana

A tooth from the "dwarf Tyrant" tyrannosaur, Nanotyrannus lancensis. It comes from the Hell Creek Formation in Carter County, Montana. This formation was laid down by ancient floodplains in the Late Cretaceous and preserves fossils of Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus, as well as many other well known dinosaurs. Its top, the K-Pg boundary, marks the asteroid impact that ended the dinosaurs.

Debate surrounds Nanotyrannus, with some scientistis arguing it’s a distinct genus while others see it as a juvenile T. rex. Either way, this tooth exhibits morphological traits commonly associated with Nanotyrannus lancensis, such as a slender, blade-like form and finer serrations than rex, though its taxonomic status remains debated as a potential juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex.
