Meteorite Slice | H3.8 Ordinary Chondrite | NWA 925

A slice of stony meteorite (NWA 925) from the Sahara Desert of North West Africa.

This meteorite originated from near the cool, outer crust of an asteroid. Because it stayed away from the scorching interior heat, it is a pristine "cosmic time capsule" that has barely changed in 4.5 billion years. Without heat to melt things together, the tiny round space-dust beads (chondrules) remain crisp, round, and intact. Because it's an "H" type (High iron), it's also packed with bright, shiny metal flecks.

Ordinary chondrites, also known as common chondrites, are the most abundant type of meteorite found on Earth. They are ancient stony objects that formed within the solar disc about 4.5 billion years ago and which are by far the most frequently discovered "space rocks." Many of these are found in large strewnfields in the North Western Sahara.

The meteorite comes in a floating display (specimen can be removed from display).
