Meteorite Slice | L5 Ordinary Chondrite | NWA 2947

A slice of stony meteorite (NWA 2947) from the Sahara Desert of North West Africa.

This meteorite originates from the mid-layers of an ancient asteroid—deep enough to be thermally baked by the hot interior of the asteroid, but far enough from the center to avoid melting completely. Because it sat in this "warm zone," you can still see distinct chondrules—tiny, spherical beads of molten dust that formed in space before the asteroid even assembled.

Ordinary chondrites, also known as common chondrites, are the most abundant type of meteorite found on Earth. They are ancient stony objects that formed within the solar disc about 4.5 billion years ago and which are by far the most frequently discovered "space rocks." Many of these are found in large strewnfields in the North Western Sahara.

The meteorite comes in a floating display (specimen can be removed from display).
