A slice of stony meteorite (NWA 518) from the Sahara Desert of North West Africa.

This rock originated deep inside the interior of its parent asteroid. Over 4.5 billion years ago, intense heat inside the asteroid melted and fused its building blocks together. Because it spent millions of years in the hot core, its internal grains blurred together into a smooth, speckled gray interior with light sprinkles of shiny metal flecks.

Ordinary chondrites, also known as common chondrites, are the most abundant type of meteorite found on Earth. They are ancient stony objects that formed within the solar disc about 4.5 billion years ago and which are by far the most frequently discovered "space rocks." Many of these are found in large strewnfields in the North Western Sahara.

The meteorite comes in a floating display (specimen can be removed from display).
