Triceratops Tooth

A Triceratops tooth from the Hell Creek Formation in Carter County, Montana. This a 'spit tooth', a tooth worn down through feeding on tough vegitation and shed while the animal was alive. Triceratops had several hundred teeth, arranged into groups called batteries. Newly erupted, these teeth were leaf shaped but would chisel down as the animal fed, eventually being ejected by the animal to make way for a fresh tooth.

The formation where this tooth was found, the Hell Creek Formation, was laid down by ancient floodplains in the Late Cretaceous and preserves fossils of Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus, as well as many other well known dinosaurs. Its top, the K-Pg boundary, marks the asteroid impact that ended the dinosaurs. Triceratops fossils, especially their teeth, are some of the most commonly found dinosaur fossils in this formation.

This is a very nice, large spit tooth with no repairs. It comes stored in a display box featuring the specimen name, region it was found, age and a QR code linking to some information about Triceratops (fossil can be removed from the box).
