For over 7,000 years, the Sar-e-Sang mines in Afghanistan’s remote Badakhshan Province have produced the world’s most prestigious lapis lazuli. Nestled high in the rugged Hindu Kush mountains, these deposits yield a deep, celestial blue stone rich in lazurite and often speckled with golden pyrite "stars."

Historically revered as "blue gold," this specific Afghan source supplied the raw material for ancient Egyptian treasures and was later ground into the priceless ultramarine pigment used by Renaissance masters. Despite the treacherous high-altitude terrain and regional instability, Badakhshan remains the global benchmark for quality, producing vibrant, calcite-free specimens
