Lunar Meteorite (NWA 16315)

A Lunar meteorite (NWA 16315). This is an actual piece of the Moon which was ejected into space by an asteroid impact before eventually falling to Earth as a meteorite.

A scientific "breccia" (a "smash-up" of the Moon’s original crust) it preserves a prehistoric mixture of white highland crust and dark volcanic glass from the lunar surface. The small white flecks in this piece are anorthosite, the same rock type that makes the Moon look bright white in the night sky. Less than 1% of all meteorites found on Earth are lunar in origin, making them significantly rarer than gold or diamonds.
