Pterosaur Tooth (Ornithocheirid)

Ornithocheirid pterosaurs, a family of pterodactyloid reptiles from the Early to mid-Cretaceous, were skilled fliers with wingspans ranging from 2 to 8 meters, adapted for soaring over oceans. They had long, slender jaws with sharp teeth for catching fish, and some species sported bony crests for display.

The geological formation where this tooth was found, the Elrhaz Formation, located in the Ténéré Desert of Niger, is an Early Cretaceous (112 million years ago) sedimentary unit renowned for its exceptional vertebrate fossil record. Composed of fluvial sandstones, mudstones, and conglomerates, it represents a lush, river-dominated floodplain environment with seasonal lakes and abundant vegetation. This formation is famous for yielding Suchomimus tenerensis, a piscivorous spinosaurid, alongside the sauropod Nigersaurus taqueti, crocodyliforms like Sarcosuchus imperator, and diverse fish and pterosaurs.
