Acheulean hand axe (Homo erectus)

An Acheulean hand axe from Tafilalt in Morocco. It dates to the Lower Paleolithic, roughly 1.7 million to 300,000 years ago, and was likely crafted by Homo erectus or early Homo heidelbergensis.

These early humans in the Tafilalt region, part of the Sahara when it was a lush savanna, were hunter-gatherers who used hand axes for butchering game, processing hides, and extracting bone marrow. These symmetrical, bifacially worked tools reflect advanced cognitive and technical skills, enabling survival in a diverse environment alongside prehistoric wildlife like bison and elephants.
