Diplodocus Tooth

A Dipolodocus tooth from Colorado. Part of the Diplodocidae family, Diplodocus had peg-like teeth at the front of its mouth, suited for stripping leaves off plants like ferns and soft conifers.

The tooth comes from the Morrison Formation in Colorado. This formation, deposited about 150 million years ago during the Late Jurassic, is a vast sequence of sedimentary rocks spread across the western United States, primarily formed in a terrestrial environment of floodplains, rivers, and shallow lakes. Its layers of mudstone, sandstone, and limestone were laid down by meandering rivers and periodic flooding in a warm, seasonal climate, capturing a snapshot of ancient ecosystems. This formation is renowned for its rich fossil record, hosting an array of dinosaurs like the massive sauropods Apatosaurus and Diplodocus, theropods such as Allosaurus, and ornithischians like Stegosaurus, alongside smaller creatures like early mammals, crocodiles, turtles, and fish, all thriving in a dynamic, lush landscape.   

The tooth comes stored in a display box featuring the specimen name, region it was found, age and a QR code linking to some information about Diplodocus (fossil can be removed from the box).
