A large piece of malachite from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Malachite, a vibrant green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral with the formula is prized for its swirling, banded patterns. It forms in the oxidized zones of copper deposits, where groundwater interacts with copper-rich rocks. Malachite has a rich history - ancient Egyptians used it as a pigment for cosmetics, tomb paintings, and eye makeup.
