Hypselosaurus Sauropod Eggshell (France)

The geological formation where this eggshell was found, the Rognacian Formation, located in the Aix-en-Provence Basin of southern France, is Late Cretaceous in age. It formed in a floodplain environment with seasonal aridity, ideal for preserving dinosaur fossils, such as Hypselosaurus sauropod eggshells. This formation has yielded significant titanosaur remains, including bones, eggs, and footprints, offering insights into the region’s ecosystems just before the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction. The formation’s distinct red hue, due to iron staining, is a key identifier of its fossils.
