Ichthyovenator Tooth

A rare Ichthyovenator dinosaur tooth from Loas. Ichthyovenator is one of the few spinosaurid dinosaurs known from Asia. The name "Ichthyovenator" translates to "fish hunter," reflecting its likely diet of fish, as suggested by its elongated snout and conical teeth. This is a nice tooth with good enamel.

The formation where this tooth was found, the Grès Supérieurs Formation in Laos, dating to the Early Cretaceous, is a geological unit laid down by a fluvial environment. It has yielded dinosaur fossils, including indeterminate iguanodontian remains, teeth from the Spinosaurid dinosaur Ichthyovenator, and sauropod tracks, offering a glimpse into a diverse ecosystem. Equivalent to Thailand’s Khok Kruat Formation, it shares similar fauna, suggesting regional connectivity during the Cretaceous. Its significance lies in documenting Southeast Asia’s Early Cretaceous dinosaurs, though limited material leaves much of its fauna poorly understood.
