Theropod Tooth (Portugal)

A rare theropod dinosaur tooth from Lourinhã, Portugal. This tooth is missing its tip, but features some good enamel and serrations.

The formation where this tooth was found, the Lourinhã Formation, located in Portugal’s Lusitanian Basin, is a Late Jurassic geological unit laid down by a coastal floodplain. It is renowned for its rich dinosaur fossil record, including theropods like Torvosaurus and Ceratosaurus, sauropods such as Lusotitan, and ornithischians like Draconyx, alongside eggs and tracks. Exposed along the coast between Peniche and Santa Cruz, its cliffs, particularly at Porto das Barcas, yield well-preserved fossils that offer a glimpse into a diverse Jurassic ecosystem. This formation’s significance lies in its similarity to North America’s Morrison Formation, which was geographically close during the Late Jurassic.
