Iguanodontid Rib Bone (Isle of Wight)

An Iguanodontid rib bone from the Wessex Formation of the Isle of Wight. Iguanodontids were a diverse group of herbivorous dinosaurs that roamed the Earth during the Early Cretaceous period. They were characterized by their large size, distinctive thumb spikes, and specialized teeth for grinding plant material. British Iguanodontids were also amongst some of the first dinosaurs ever described. This is a good section of rib featuring nice bone detail.

The geological formation where this tooth was found, the Wessex Formation, is an Early Cretaceous geological unit of mudstones, sandstones, and plant debris beds, formed in a subtropical floodplain with rivers and lagoons. It yields diverse fossils, including iguanodontids like Iguanodon and Mantellisaurus, theropods like Neovenator, and sauropods like Ornithopsis, plus crocodiles, fish, and pollen. Its significance lies in its rich dinosaur record, offering a snapshot of a vibrant, herbivore-dominated ecosystem in prehistoric Europe.
