Iguanodontid Tooth (England)

An Iguanodontid tooth from the Ashdown Formation of England. Iguanodontids were a diverse group of herbivorous dinosaurs that roamed the Earth during the Early Cretaceous period. They were characterized by their large size, distinctive thumb spikes, and specialized teeth for grinding plant material. British Iguanodontids were also amongst some of the first dinosaurs ever described. This tooth features some damage and a repair but is a very affordable way to own a real British Iguanodontid tooth! 

The geological unit where this tooth was found, the Ashdown Formation, is part of the Wealden Group in southeast England and is Early Cretaceous in age. Exposed in East Sussex and Kent, it preserves fossils of dinosaurs like Barilium (an iguanodontid), Hypselospinus, and early theropods, alongside fish, crocodiles, and plants. Its significance lies in providing insights into Early Cretaceous ecosystems of the Weald Basin, with fossil-rich beds like those at Hastings revealing a diverse, subtropical floodplain fauna
