Afrovenator Tooth

An Afrovenator tooth from the Tiouraren Formation of Niger. Afrovenator, a Megalosaurid dinosaur, was a large predator, growing to around 8 meters in length. It had powerful jaws that contained rows of serrated, dagger-like teeth and three fingers with sickel shaped claws. This tooth has some wear and damage, as is common for teeth from this formation, but it's a good size and a very affordable way to own a real Jurassic theropod tooth!

The geological formation where this tooth was found, the Tiourarén Formation, located in Niger’s Ténéré Desert, is a Middle Jurassic geological unit known for its fluvial and lacustrine deposits. Spanning a low-relief floodplain with rivers and lakes, it preserves fossils of dinosaurs like the theropod Afrovenator and sauropod Jobaria, alongside crocodyliforms and fish. Its paleoenvironment suggests a warm, seasonally wet climate, ideal for diverse vertebrate life. The formation’s significance lies in its rare glimpse into Jurassic African ecosystems, with Afrovenator highlighting early theropod evolution.
