Description

The Primitive World by Adolphe François Pannemaker. This coloured engraving depicts the world of the dinosaurs as the artist imagined it in 1857. In the foreground sharp toothed sea monsters duel, while in the background fire tornadoes whirl and volcanoes erupt.  Note the 'Bat-o-saur' flying overhead.  There were multiple theories regarding Pterosaurs; some wondered if they were ancient bats, while others thought they were flying reptiles, and some even believed they may have been the handiwork of Satan.
