the dresser formation stromatolites

The Dresser Formation in Western Australia houses some of the oldest known fossils on Earth: stromatolites. These layered rock formations are the result of microbial activity, primarily by cyanobacteria. These ancient microorganisms, some of the earliest forms of life, trapped sediment and minerals as they grew, creating distinctive layered structures.  The stromatolites of the Dresser Formation, dating back over 3.4 billion years, offer a glimpse into the early Earth, when life was just beginning to emerge and shape our planet.  Their discovery provides crucial evidence for the early development of life and the oxygenation of the Earth's atmosphere.
