Coprolite with Clear Inclusions (Fossil Dung) (Kem Kem) #09

Description

A coprolite (fossil dung) from the Kem Kem Beds of Morocco.  This coprolite contains multiple fish scales.

This mid-Cretaceous coprolite is around 94 - 100 million years old.  At the time North Africa was dominated by mangrove forests and vast river systems leading out to the Tethys Sea (an ancient sea which existed between 250 and 50 million years ago, before the evolution of the indian ocean). The region was home to a large number of theropod dinosaurs, sauropods, pterosaurs, crocodilians and fish. Some of the fish could grow to enormous sizes (these were often preyed upon by the semi-aquatic dinosaur Spinosaurus. 

Comes stored in a case with padding.
